Acabar by itself means to finish, to end. Simple. Acabar de + infinitive means "just [did something]" — the action happened moments ago and you can still feel it.

Acabar → Ela acabou o trabalho. She finished the work. Acabar de → Nós acabámos de chegar a casa. We just arrived home.

Same verb. Completely different job.

Let's put it into practice.

Complete the sentences with the correct form of acabar or acabar de + verb.

  1. O filme ________ às 21:00. — The movie finished at 9pm.
  2. Eles ________ sair, ainda os podes ver ao longe. — They just left, you can still see them from afar.
  3. Eu ________ o livro ontem à noite. — I finished the book last night.
  4. Nós ________ chegar ao restaurante. — We just arrived at the restaurant.
  5. A apresentação ________ começar. — The presentation just started.

Now translate these into Portuguese:

  1. "I just finished my coffee."
  2. "They finished the project yesterday."
  3. "We just arrived at the airport."
  4. "The concert ended a few minutes ago."
  5. "She just went out."

Café Com Caos

Because learning European Portuguese was never going to be tidy. Every week: the language, the culture, the things nobody puts in a textbook. Written from Lisbon, with coffee and chaos.
Lição Nº1 The series that teaches you Portuguese the way I teach my students.
Someone left a comment online last week about feeling completely lost on where to even begin with Portuguese. I see this all the time. So we're doing something about it. A proper guide, in order, the same way I work with my private students. You get a preview of exactly what that looks like. Today: how to say what you're doing right now. Before vocabulary lists, before grammar tables, before a...

1. PT Vamos começar pelo porquê do caos: os meus amigos costumam dizer que eu tenho sempre mil coisas a acontecer ao mesmo tempo. Eu até concordo… mas posso dizer que é um caos… controlado. E o porquê do café? É o meu combustível no dia a dia — como professora e como humana. Na realidade, esta ideia começou com uma dinâmica engraçada. Eu comprei uma refeição numa app chamada Too Good To Go (bas...
